MANILA - Violators of the 48-hour "hard lockdown" of Sampaloc in Manila will be detained in the district's basketball court for 48 hours, Mayor Isko Moreno said Wednesday.

"This is literal so nobody would be confused. Simple direction, don’t go out sa mga bahay ninyo," he said in an interview on ABS-CBN News Channel.

"If you violate it, mas mahirap matulog sa mga basketball court...Hindi siya dinesign para tulugan, para tirahan. Medyo magiging uncomfortable 'yung ating mahuhuli na violators ng hard lockdown."

Moreno earlier announced that all residents of Sampaloc will be "strictly confined to their residence and are prohibited from going out of their houses" from 8 p.m. Thursday until 8 p.m. Saturday.

"Parola had a 24-hour lockdown. It can happen to Tondo, San Andres, basta nakikita namin na nalalagay sa alanganin ang aming mga kababayan na higit na nakararami," he told ANC.

"Marami talagang sumusunod, nakikita namin talagang nagsasakrpisyo 'yung tao. Kaya lang 'yung iilan. Ito kasi ang krisis o delubyo na dahil sa ilan, dahil sa isa, can spread the virus. 'Yung iilan malaki rin ang epekto."

The district has "one of the biggest percentage" of COVID-19 patients in the city, Moreno said.

"48 hours so it can pave the way sa ating testing na gagawin sa mga specific areas and individuals. More or less meron kaming tinatarget na a few dozen individuals," he said.

Sampaloc as of Monday had 99 residents with COVID-19 and was monitoring some 285 probable carriers of the respiratory disease, the highest figure in Manila, he earlier said.

Street dwellers, meanwhile, may approach the city government for temporary shelter, Moreno said. Some 200 homeless have been taken in by the local government since Luzon went on lockdown, he added.

"Meron silang kaniya-kaniyang tent, pinapakain natin ng umaga, tanghali, gabi at meron ding palikuran," he said.

"If there’s still some street dwellers, i-accommodate rin naman ng ating pamahalaang lungsod."

The city has distributed food boxes and P1,000 cash aid to each family, Moreno said.

It has also given 65,00 senior citizens their allowance, while it will give scholars and persons with disabilities their financial assistance Wednesday, he added.
