She ran unopposed in the midterm election.</figcaption></figure></div>The Provincial Board of Canvassers proclaimed on Wednesday Maria Lourdes “Marilou” Arroyo Lesaca, sister-in-law of House Speaker Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, as the winner in the congressional race in the 5th district of Negros Occidental.Lesaca was accompanied by her husband, musician John Lesaca, and daughter Nicole, during her proclamation.Based on the certificate of canvass from the PBOC, Lesaca (LAKAS) had 105,277 votes. She ran unopposed.“She just said help each other. Politics has ended. Hit the ground running,” said Lesaca on the advice given to her by Arroyo.Lesaca is the sister of the former First Gentleman Jose Miguel Arroyo and the late Rep. Ignacio Arroyo who served in the same district in 2004.She hopes peace will reign in her district that has been on close watch by the Philippine Army and the Philippine National Police because of incidents of violence and killings and the presence of the New People’s Army. She appealed to candidates to set aside politics and start working for the good of their towns and cities.Lesaca is not new to politics having served as party-list representative of Kasangga in the 14th Congress.Among her thrusts in her district are improved health services, education and infrastructure.
