MANILA — The Department of Education (DepEd) on Sunday said it set a month-long enrollment period in June for students in public schools, which can be accomplished either physically or online.

The DepEd, in a recently released order, scheduled the enrollment period for the upcoming school year from June 1 to 30.

Students may undergo online enrollment or have their forms delivered to schools so they no longer have to leave their homes, and help avoid the risk of contracting the new coronavirus, said Education Undersecretary Revsee Escobedo.

"Puwedeng online enrollment at puwede ring iyong forms ay sasagutan ng mga bata at ng mga magulang, at ipapadala sa eskuwelahan," Escobedo told Teleradyo.

"Puwedeng physical, puwedeng virtual," he said.

Education Undersecretary Nepomuceno Malaluan earlier said the enrollment period in June would "revalidate" the early registration for School Year 2020 to 2021, which was held last February 1 to March 6.

Some parents may no longer want to send their children to schools while the country continued to deal with the coronavirus pandemic, Malaluan said.

"Itong June 1 to 30 ay panahon para ma-revalidate 'yan [early registration] dahil nag-iba 'yong condition. Hindi natin alam kung 'yong mga magulang ay handa pa ring papasukin 'yong kanilang mga anak," he said.

During enrollment, enrollees and their parents or guardians will also be asked to answer a survey, which will help identify the learning delivery mode suitable for the student.

The learner may be asked whether they have gadgets and access to the internet, as well as their mode of transportation to school, Malaluan earlier said.

The upcoming school year is scheduled to formally start on August 24 but private schools are allowed to start as early as June as long as they do not conduct in-person classes.

The DepEd gave schools the freedom to choose which learning delivery modes to implement, depending on the health situation in their locality and available resources.
