Presidential photo</figcaption></figure></div>MANILA - President Rodrigo Duterte and South Korean President Moon Jae-in on Monday reaffirmed the nearly seven-decade ties of the two Asian nations.Moon welcomed Duterte at the Blue House (Cheong Wa Dae) at the capital Seoul following the Philippine leader’s visit at the national cemetery.Duterte said he is eager to work with Moon “in writing a new chapter of a shared history of cooperation, friendship and partnership between the Philippines and the Republic of Korea.”“With the advancement that we have achieved together, there is still room for healthy growth. I am pleased to discuss ways to move our relations further forward,” Duterte said at the beginning of his bilateral meeting with Moon.The President added that a deeper engagement with South Korea is needed “to achieve shared aspirations for our people and regions.”Duterte also noted the Philippines’ participation in the Korean War, in which the two countries, he said, “fought side by side in defense of freedom and democracy.”“That is a legacy that must be remembered and continuously reaffirmed,” he said.Moon, for his part, highlighted the growing trade and people-to-people ties between the Philippines and South Korea.“Korea is the fifth largest trade partner for the Philippines and our bilateral trade volume reached 14.3 billion dollars last year,” Moon said.“People-to-people exchanges continue to expand as well, so much so that nowadays Koreans are the most frequent visitors to the Philippines.”Moon said he hopes Duterte’s Korea visit will “further solidify the foundations for developing Korea’s partnership with the Philippines which is a key partner in implementing this initiative.”Four agreements are expected to be signed in the official visit involving transportation, trade and industry, science and a loan agreement for the Cebu International Container port project.There are 60,000 Filipinos in South Korea according to the Commission on Filipinos Overseas.South Korea was the Philippines&#x27; tenth largest market for exports last April, with shipments valued at $157.11 million, according to the Philippine Statistics Authority.Many of South Korea&#x27;s largest companies are present in the Philippines, including electronics giants Samsung and LG, ship-maker Hanjin and automaker Hyundai.Pop music and TV soaps from South Korea are also popular in the Philippines, underscoring ties that go as far back as the Korean War.
