1,100 barangay execs risk Ombudsman raps over Manila Bay cleanup: DILG

<figure class="op-interactive"><iframe height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/XZIQdIFfN0c?enablejsapi=1" width="560"></iframe></figure><div class="iwantbar">Watch more in <a href="//www.iwantv.com.ph/">iWantv</a> or <a href="//tfc.tv/">TFC.tv</a></div><p>Officials from 1,129 barangays have been ordered to explain their alleged failure to participate in the rehabilitation of Manila Bay, Interior Undersecretary Martin Diño said Tuesday. </p><p>Complaints will be filed against the officials before the Office of the Ombudsman if they fail to explain within 5 days, as directed in a show-cause order, he told radio DZMM. </p><p>The interior department earlier ordered officials in 5,700 barangays in and near Metro Manila to clean coastal areas or inland water systems every week and document the activity. </p><p>The government will now focus on informing the public on penalties against dumping trash into the bays of the capital and nearby Laguna province, said Diño. </p><p>Manila Bay&#x27;s clean-up was launched last Jan. 27, 3 months after the government ended the half-year closure and rehabilitation of Boracay island, another famed tourist spot. </p><p>Experts earlier said the cleanup of the whole bay and its surrounding areas could take years and could cost P47 billion. </p><div><br/><strong>DZMM, June 4, 2019</strong></div>
