ILOILO CITY - Local chief executives of Western Visayas are eyeing the reopening of Boracay Island to revive the region&#x27;s tourism industry.Among all sectors in the region, the tourism industry is the most affected by the COVID-19 crisis, with estimated losses pegged at P5.64 billion, according to a presentation during the local officials&#x27; meeting held Wednesday in Iloilo City.To counter the huge losses, one of the proposals is to loosen up the mobility of people in the region and boost domestic tourism.With Aklan Governor Florencio Miraflores agreeing to the proposal, his province is considering to open Boracay Island, its top tourist destination, to residents of the region.&quot;We don’t want to open it to the rest of the country first. But we are willing to open it within Western Visayas,&quot; Miraflores said at the meeting.&quot;The rest of June, we will be preparing for the eventual opening. And maybe, by July, we will be ready for domestic tourism in Western Visayas,&quot; he added.So far, three hotels in the island have been accredited to resume operations once tourists are allowed to enter.&quot;In the next two weeks, we will start inspecting all the hotels that have indicated the intent to open. But we would like to make sure, in an event that we open a hotel, they are really compliant with the safety requirements,&quot; Miraflores said.Currently, swimming in Boracay is limited only to the island&#x27;s residents.Miraflores confirmed that Tourism Secretary Bernadette Puyat is set to visit Boracay to assess the situation there.
