Storm signals raised in Luzon as Butchoy barrels towards northern Quezon

MANILA - The state weather bureau on Thursday raised tropical cyclone wind signals (TCWS) over different parts of Luzon as Tropical Depression Butchoy advanced towards the island.

In its 5 p.m. bulletin, PAGASA said Butchoy was last spotted 75 kilometers northwest of Daet, Camarines Norte packing maximum sustained winds of 45 kilometers per hour near the center and 55 kph gusts while moving west northwest at 20 kph.

The weather disturbance is expected to cross Polillo Island and make landfall over northern Quezon or southern Aurora area between Thursday night and Friday morning.

PAGASA raised TCWS No. 1 over the following:

  • Bataan
  • Tarlac
  • Pampanga
  • Nueva Ecija
  • Bulacan
  • Southern portion of Aurora (Dingalan, San Luis)
  • Metro Manila
  • Rizal
  • Laguna
  • Cavite
  • Northern and central portion of Quezon (General Nakar, Infanta, Real, Panukulan, Burdeos, Polillo, Patnanungan, Jomalig, Mauban, Sampaloc, Lucban, San Antonio, Tiaong, Dolores, Candelaria, Sariaya, Tayabas City, Lucena City, Pagbilao, Atimonan, Padre Burgos, Agdangan, Unisan, Plaridel, Gumaca, Pitogo, Macalelon, Lopez, Guinayangan, Tagkawayan, Calauag, Quezon, Alabat, Perez)
  • Camarines Norte

These areas, including other parts of southern Luzon, parts of Visayas and Mindanao, may experience occasional gusts associated with Butchoy and the southwest monsoon, said PAGASA.

Moderate to rough seas with waves of 1.2 meters to 3.4 meters will be experienced over the seaboards of Luzon and Visayas in the next 24 hours, according to the weather agency.

Those with small seacraft are advised not to venture out to sea while larger sea vessels must take precaution against rough seas.

Between Thursday afternoon and Friday morning, moderate to heavy with at times intense rains will prevail over Calabarzon, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Albay, Northern portion of Palawan including Calamian and Cuyo Islands, Occidental Mindoro, Marinduque and Romblon.

Moderate to heavy rains will also be experienced in Central Luzon, Metro Manila, Western Visayas, Oriental Mindoro, and the rest of Bicol region and Palawan.

Light to moderate with at times heavy rains are expected in the rest of Luzon and Visayas.

Between Friday morning and Saturday morning, moderate to heavy rains will pour over Central Luzon, Metro Manila, Calabarzon, the northern portion of Palawan including Calamian and Cuyo Islands, Mindoro Provinces, and Pangasinan.

Light to moderate with at times heavy rains will fall in Western Visayas and the rest of Luzon.

Flooding and rain-induced landslides may occur during heavy or prolonged rainfall especially in areas that are highly or very highly susceptible to these hazards, said PAGASA.
