MANILA - Government officials on Monday allayed fears of jeepney drivers and business operators, as the government formally launched its plan to modernize the public utility transport system.

Officials said there will be enough time for transition, with the government looking at executing the modernization in 3 years.

Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) spokesperson Aileen Lizada said the program allows 3 years to identify route plans.

Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade said he also won't stop jeepney drivers and operators from launching a nationwide strike, but reminded them that there are laws governing such activities.

Under the Public Utility Vehicle (PUV) Modernization Program, old jeepneys will be phased out and replaced by new and passenger-safe vehicles.

The PUV modernization program imposes new franchising guidelines, in a bid to solve transportation and road safety woes of the country.
