MANILA - Transportation authorities on Saturday said it has given the go signal for UV Express vehicles to ply 47 routes linking Metro Manila to nearby provinces starting June 29.

Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board chief Martin Delgra said allowing UV Express services to operate is part of the government’s gradual approach in the resumption of public transport in Metro Manila, which is under general community quarantine.

Some 980 UV Express vehicles will be allowed to operate, the LTFRB said in a Facebook post.

Several forms of public transport were suspended under a strict lockdown of over two months. The capital region shifted to a general community quarantine on June 1.

Delgra said the LTFRB is “not discounting the possibility” of adding modern and traditional jeepneys to augment UV Express vehicles allowed to operate.

Fare rates for UV Express will remain the same, but Delgra reminded operators and drivers to comply with minimum health standards such as requiring commuters to wear face masks, implementing physical distancing among passengers, and constant monitoring of drivers for any illnesses.

There will also be an “exact fare policy” for commuters. Otherwise drivers shall have to craft a way which could prevent virus contamination while giving out change.
