MANILA – The Philippine National Police on Saturday ordered the temporary suspension of all activities for new cadets of the Philippine National Police Academy (PNPA) following the death of two of its plebes.

In a statement, the PNP said Cadet Fourth Class Jiary Jasen Papa died due to electrolyte imbalance or hypokalemia Friday morning.

Papa’s logbook showed that she requested permission to go to the comfort room at 2:30 a.m. and later went back to sleep. An hour later, she woke up to prepare for early morning activity but suddenly collapsed beside her bunks.

Papa was immediately brought to the Academy Health Service by duty cadets to give first aid and rushed to Qualimed Hospital in Santa Rosa, Laguna for full medical attention.

Papa’s parents have been informed about her death and were also assured of financial assistance due to new members of PNPA Cadetship Program, including insurance protection and benefits from the Public Safety Mutual Benefit Fund Inc.

As part of protocols, her body will undergo COVID-19 swab test.
Papa is the second cadet to die in less than a week. On July 8, Cadet Fourth Class Kenneth Ross Alvarado collapsed after participating in evening mess formation due to heat stroke.

PNPA Director Police Major General Jose Chiquito Malayo said all activities for the members of the PNPA Class of 2024 will be suspended until further evaluation and assessment.
