MANILA - (UPDATED) The Angono police station apologized Wednesday for a Facebook post on how to prevent rape, which some netizens called out for supposedly espousing misogyny.

The post advised netizens to refrain from wearing short clothes, drinking on dates and walking alone in dark places. It also encouraged learning self-defense and carrying tear gas or pepper spray.

Some netizens said police should instead discourage potential perpetrators from committing rape, citing how the tips bordered on victim blaming.

"Ang Angono Municipal Police Station sa pamumuno ni PSUPT RUBEN M PIQUERO ay taos-pusong humihingi ng paumanhin sa lahat hinggil sa aming FB Post na 'Paalaala Para Makaiwas sa Rape,'" the unit wrote on Facebook.

The Angono police also said it had good intentions in issuing the reminders.

"Ang amin pong intensiyon ay mapaalalahanan ang lahat para maiwasan po na maging biktima ng insidente ng rape. Sabi nga po 'An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,'" it wrote.

RAPE STATS DOWN

The anti-crime tips were part of the Angono police's information drive against crime. It earlier released guidelines to combat robbery, carjacking and killings, among others.

Angono's top cop, Piquero, noted that the town recorded 12 rape cases last year, in which 10 of the victims were underage.

Police, he said, tallied 3 rape cases from January to March 2018 or one incident per month, and none since the police launched its information campaign in April.

He welcomed the offer of Senator Risa Hontiveros and women's advocacy group Gabriela to train the Angono police on producing gender-sensitive information materials.
