MANILA - Local chief executives in Metro Manila are drawing new guidelines for the suspension of classes to keep students safe from floods and rains, Quezon City Mayor Herbert Bautista said Tuesday.

Some students plodded through flooded streets last month after some officials issued late announcements on cancelled classes.

New guidelines on class suspensions will iron out coordination among local agencies, the state weather bureau, the education and public works departments, and other relevant agencies, Bautista told reporters at a meeting of the Metro Manila Council in Taguig.

Officials eye finalizing the guidelines in 2 weeks. In the meantime, mayors would remain in charge of the suspension of classes, he added.

Bautista's announcement comes as tropical depression Karding and a low pressure area threatened to stir the southwest monsoon and bring rains over large sections of the country.
