Mark Demayo, ABS-CBN News/File</figcaption></figure></div>MANILA (UPDATE) — The Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA) on Tuesday inked agreements and partnerships with different government agencies to achieve socioeconomic development through the use of different space-related technologies such as satellite images.The use of space and satellite technology will help map out climate hazards and provide the government with an &quot;agile view&quot; before, during, and after disasters, said PhilSA Director-General Joel Joseph Marciano.The budget and science departments, as well as the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, participated in the agreements.<ul class="op-related-articles">	<li><a href="https://news.abs-cbn.com/news/10/19/22/marcos-to-tap-space-agency-to-improve-security-economy">Marcos to tap PH Space Agency to improve security, economy</a></li></ul>Marciano said much like the infrastructure on earth, it is also important to build and use infrastructures in space.“Kasi ang mga satellites na yan nagbibigay ng valuable information na ginagamit natin sa pangaraw-araw sa pagcommute natin, sa pag order ng pagkain, sa pag connect sa internet, sa pag send ng information, nagpe-play ng role ang space technology,” he said.Satellite images from PhilSA have been able to identify and give Filipinos a general view of different areas that were submerged in floods in the wake of Typhoon Egay.Over time, satellite images will also be able to identify other environmental changes that may influence policy and decision-making.“This will give us a more agile and quicker view of the situation. Kapag may mga ganitong mga pangyayari, immediately nagmomobilize ang mga teams natin. Para agad may turnaround ang data. Binibigay natin ito sa OCD sa NDRRMC bilang contribution sa other information na magagamit nila sa pag tugon sa mga disasters,&quot; he said. <div>Maps for better commuting experience</div>In the wake of the onslaught of supertyphoon Egay, PhilSA’s Disaster Risk Reduction team and the Department of Science and Technology’s Advanced Science and Technology Institute generated flood impact maps of different areas affected.For Kathleen Magcalas, a university freshman who is new to commuting to different areas, satellite maps that indicate flood-prone areas will inevitably help commuters to prepare and plan their routes during bad weather.“If mas mapapababa nila ito at magiging accessible sa lahat, I think mas mapapadali yung buhay ng mga commuter especially yung mga estudyanteng araw-araw nagko-commute papuntang school,” Magcalas said.She added that making the maps accessible on different social media platforms will not only make the public more aware of different areas vulnerable to certain risks but even more so increase their knowledge about the PhilSA and its different programs.<ul class="op-related-articles">	<li><a href="https://news.abs-cbn.com/news/07/29/23/marcos-declares-aug-8-14-as-philippine-space-week">Marcos declares Aug. 8-14 as Philippine Space Week</a></li>	<li><a href="https://news.abs-cbn.com/news/04/24/23/first-in-asia-philippines-eu-launch-space-cooperation">First in Asia: Philippines, EU launch space cooperation program</a></li>	<li><a href="https://news.abs-cbn.com/news/05/16/23/ph-seeks-to-be-space-capable-space-faring-by-2030">Philippines seeks to be ‘space-capable, space-faring’ by 2030: DFA</a></li></ul><div>Landmark agreements</div>The Land Bank of the Philippines and the Department of Science and Technology also signed a tripartite agreement with PhilSA to collaborate in scientific and technological research on the use of space data and analytics for financial applications.Meanwhile, the Mindanao Development Authority aims to work with PhilSA on research and development projects that would accelerate socioeconomic development through the use of space data. Here the geospatial data will be utilized for local government planning, policy-making and monitoring. MinDa Secretary Belen Acosta said the mechanism will “provide a sustainable means of building expertise and sharing up-to-date space-based information about the country.”“More importantly, our Mindanao LGUs are poised to reap the benefits of this upcoming project and we look forward to more of Mindanao’s inclusion in various space-based information and project development initiatives,” she said.As for the enhancement of fisheries management and application, space technology, remote sensing and data science application will be among the collaborations that PhilSA and BFAR will undertake.Night-time satellite imaging The importance of satellite images is important not only for pre-disasters but even more so in the hours and days after it strikes.Dr. Ariel Blanco, PhilSA Director, explains that monitoring night images allow authorities to identify which areas are affected by power outages as well as the speed of which they are restored.“Pag dumaan yung malakas na bagyo makita natin yung reslience ng isang region na naibabalik agad yung kuryente. Yun yung addtional use ng night time lights,&quot; Blanco said. &quot;Nagagamit din siya for energy, electrification program. Meron din activity na kailangan ang night lights, titignan natin kung gaano nageextend yung electrification program ng government,” he said.Satellite images are also able to observe temperature through thermal satellite images which may be able to point to various reasons why an area is experiencing rising temperatures.“Dapat patuloy na tinitignan yung pag init ng siyudad dahil nagpapalit tayo, tinatangal ang vegetation tapos pinapalitan ng aspalto, konkreto, yero so ito’y patuloy na iinit. Tinitignan ang temperature sa umaga at gabi at magdudulot ng implication,” he said.PhilSA said the public can expect a consistent stream of executions using different resources that will be important use to everyday living.
