<div class="embed-wrap"><figure data-feedback="fb:likes,fb:comments"><img src="http://sa.kapamilya.com/absnews/abscbnnews/media/2017/life/08/17/cockfighting-reuters.jpg"/></figure></div><p>The Department of Agriculture on Thursday suspended cockfighting in Pampanga for two weeks as health and veterinary experts try to contain the spread of avian flu in the province.</p><p>Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol announced the suspension order during an inspection of a processed food factory in Pampanga.</p><p>The province has been placed under a <a href="http://news.abs-cbn.com/news/08/11/17/pampanga-under-state-of-calamity-due-to-bird-flu-outbreak" target="_blank">state of calamity</a> after the avian disease killed nearly 40,000 birds in 36 farms.</p><p>Piñol earlier banned the delivery of poultry from Luzon to other parts of the country and ordered the <a href="http://news.abs-cbn.com/news/08/16/17/philippine-troops-to-help-cull-thousands-of-fowl-in-bird-flu-battle" target="_blank">culling</a> of at least <a href="http://news.abs-cbn.com/news/08/16/17/600000-pampanga-fowls-up-for-bird-flu-slaughter-says-da" target="_blank">600,000</a> fowls to curb the spread of the disease.</p><p>As of August 16, no case of human transmission has been recorded.</p><p>Should there be no new cases of the disease in 35 days, Pampanga will be declared bird-flu free, Piñol said.</p><div><strong>- with a report from Gracie Rutao, ABS-CBN News</strong></div>
