MANILA, Philippines -- More than 18,000 runners, mostly government workers, participated in the "RACE to Serve" benefit run of the Civil Service Commission (CSC) at the Quirino Grandstand and Roxas Boulevard in Manila Sunday morning.

Health officials Sec. Paulyn Ubial, Asec. Eric Tayag and GSIS chairperson Francisco Duque III also joined the run, which is on its seventh year.

Funds raised from the run will benefit the families of police officers killed in the ongoing battle for Marawi City as well as other government employees who died while performing their duties.

"Kinikilala natin ang mga kapwa kawani sa pamahalaan. dahil sa kanilang pagsisikap na mapagsilbihan ang taumbayan, binuwis nila kanilang buhay para masiguro ang serbisyo sa taumbayan ay mahatid," said Alicia Dela Rosa-Bala, CSC chairperson.

The families will each receive P100,000 and up to three children will be eligible for scholarships in a state college or university they choose to enter.

Balang said the agencies who lost employees will have to submit their identities to the CSC for verification before they will be given the benefit.

The fund is managed by the Pondong Pamanang Lingkod Bayani (PLBi), for which the CSC has raised P13.4 million since 2011. It has benefited 89 families, most notably those of the 44 police Special Action Force commandos killed in Maguindanao in 2015.

The run is also part of the CSC's 117th anniversary.
