MANILA - Senator Antonio Trillanes IV on Wednesday said he will stay inside the Senate building even if a court said the police has not been authorized to arrest him.

Trillanes spent Tuesday night in his office after President Rodrigo Duterte’s Proclamation 572 that voided his amnesty prompted members of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) to troop to the Senate to arrest him.

“Ang instinct ko kahapon, mag turn in na ako. But if we turn in ourselves voluntarily, hindi mo na maquequestion ang validity at legality ng warrantless arrest,” Trillanes told reporters.

“Ang advice sa 'kin ng Senate leadership, 'wag namin padaliin. Kailangan hindi ako magve-venture out,” he said.

Police forces had been waiting outside the Senate building in Pasay city after Senate President Vicente Sotto III said a sitting senator cannot be arrested inside congressional halls while session is in progress.

Lawmakers slammed the presence of police forces outside the Senate building as the uniformed men had no arrest warrant issued by a court.

“Alam dapat ng mga pulis na kung wala silang warrant, hindi sila puwede mang-aresto unless in flagrante delicto o sa harap mismo nila ginagawa 'yung krimen,” Senator Francis Escudero said.

Trillanes said the Senate leadership did not issue a deadline on when he could reside in his office.

Senators will have to discuss how to deal with the police who are still lingering outside the Senate despite the lack of an arrest warrant, he said.
