MANILA - The Philippine National Police on Tuesday said it has sought the assistance of the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) to help arrest exiled communist leader Joma Sison.

PNP chief, Director Oscar Albayalde said they have coordinated with the Interpol for the issuance of red notice for Sison's arrest, who is facing murder charges in the Philippines along with his wife and 36 others.

Sison and his wife Juliet, a former communist peace negotiator, have been in self-exile in the Netherlands for some 3 decades now.

"The legal basis for an Interpol red notice is an arrest warrant or court order issued by judicial authorities in a country. Many of Interpol’s member countries consider a red notice to be a valid request for provisional arrest," he told reporters in Camp Crame.

Last week, a Manila court ordered their arrest for the "Inopacan massacre," a 1980s purge of Communist Party of the Philippines members accused of various offenses in Leyte province.

The military earlier said it would "find ways" to serve the warrant to Sison.

"As for those who are, like Mr. Sison, outside the country, we may not be able to serve the warrant right away as they are outside our jurisdiction. But we are not without recourse," Military spokesman Brig. Gen. Edgard Arevalo said in a statement.
