MANILA—The earthquake that originated in Quezon province and felt in Metro Manila Friday afternoon is not expected to damage structures in the Big City, Phivolcs director Renato Solidum said.

A 5.3 earthquake shook Burdeos town, registering varying intensities in Luzon, including Metro Manila and Tagaytay.

The magnitude was initially measured at 5.5 but was changed.

"The damage of that quake in Metro Manila, we don't expect. It's too far away from the epicenter and the reported felt intensity was only 4," Solidum told ANC, adding that quakes measuring Intensity 6 are normally those that cause damage.

The Phivolcs added that a tsunami is unlikely, especially on Polillo island which was near the epicenter.

"The minimum threshold for a tsunami generated by an earthquake is around magnitude 6.5. What we have experienced are way below," Solidum said.

He said that earthquakes with a stronger magnitude could occur since the Burdeos quake was "moderate" in intensity.
