In 2013, Filipinos experienced one of the worst disasters to hit the country when Super Typhoon "Yolanda" (international name: Haiyan) wrought havoc in much of the Visayas.

Yolanda made landfall over Guiuan, Eastern Samar at 4:40 a.m. on November 8, 2013, leaving in its wake unprecedented devastation and thousands dead and missing.

Filipinos are once again preparing for a monster storm, with Typhoon Ompong (international name: Mangkhut) expected to hit the country in less than 24 hours.

Ompong is also expected to develop into "super" category as it barrels towards Northern Luzon with strong winds.

State weather bureau PAGASA and independent monitors have said this could be weaker than Yolanda.
