MANILA - Plans are in place to build a monument for Lapulapu, the Philippines' National Quincentennial Committee said on Tuesday.

The monument, to be built at Liberty Shrine in barangay Punta Engaño, Lapu-Lapu City, will be inaugurated on April 27, 2021, the 500th anniversary of Lapulapu's victory in Mactan, the committee said in a Facebook post.

NQC also said it will soon announce the guidelines for the Lapulapu National Monument Design Competition. It will be open to all Filipino designers all over the world, giving them a chance to design a "monumental, imposing and commanding landmark."

The monument, to be made of bronze, will be in tableau-classical type, similar to those of Jose Rizal and Andres Bonifacio.

A Mactan museum will also be built for Lapulapu.

"To commemorate Lapulapu is to be in communion with Rizal, Bonifacio, and the rest of the heroes who saved his memory and embraced him as part of the Filipino nation, the first democracy in Asia," NQC said.
