MANILA — Congestion in the South Luzon Expressway will ease in December after authorities remove heavy equipment and road obstructions being used in the ongoing Skyway extension project, its manager said Thursday.

Authorities recently implemented a one-way traffic scheme in SLEx's East Service Road to have more space for the Skyway extension and speed it up, said Skyway O&M Corporation (SOMCO) president Manuel Bonoan.

"The purpose of that is magkaroon kami ng kaunting space pa para mabilisan namin iyong ginagawa namin d'yan sa portion ng Skyway, para matapos namin ito lahat by end of November, wala na tayong sagabal sa December," he told radio DZMM.

(The purpose of that is so we that we can have a bit of space to fast track what we are doing in the portion of the Skyway, so that we can finish all of it by the end of November, and remove obstructions in December.)

SLEX traffic, he said, has started to improve "because people have adjusted to the situation" and adjusted their travel schedule.

"Iyong service road ang medyo binabantayan namin ngayon dahil nga para magiging smoother iyong traffic... Inside the expressway, I think manageable na doon sa pagdaloy ng traffic," he said.

Authorities on Oct. 14 will start limiting the entry of northbound trucks in SLEX during certain hours to further ease traffic, he said.

Local officials, especially in Muntinlupa, are "very cooperative" and provide inputs to traffic schemes, he added.

The 4-kilometer Skyway extension will eliminate the need for motorists to pass by the Alabang viaduct, a perennial traffic chokepoint, SOMCO earlier said.
