DepEd, pinagpapaliwanag sa pagbaba ng score sa math, science sa TIMSS

MAYNILA - Pinagpaliwanag ni Sen. Sherwin Gatchalian ngayong Lunes ang Department of Education hinggil sa bumabang resulta sa Mathematics at Science sa isinagawang Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study o TIMMS.

Sabi ni Gatchalian, chairman ng Senate Committee on Basic Education, kung ikukumpara ang 2003 at 2009 TIMSS, malaki ang ibinaba ng mga Grade 4 students sa Mathematics at Science.

Kung pag-aaralan aniya, 2003 nang ituro ang Math at Science sa pamamagitan ng bilingual method, at 2019 naman nagsimulang ituro ang dalawang subject sa pamamagitan ng mother tongue method.

"If you look at the scores between the bilingual time 2003, compare to the mother tongue time in 2019, you see a dip in the scores. You have to remember that TIMSS was given or is being given to Grade 4 students. So these are students presumably (who) went thru mother tongue during Kindergarten, Grade 1, 2, 3 and then transition to English in Grade 4. And you can see a dip in scores. Large dip in scores for Math and Science," ani Gatchalian.

Tinanong din aniya sa naturang pag-aaral kung gaano kataas ang kumpiyansa ng mga bata sa Math at Science.

Makikitang bumaba mula sa 34 porsyento hanggang 8 porsyento ang confidence level sa Mathematics, at ang mga hindi confident, tumaas mula sa 12 porsyento papuntang 36 porsyento.

"Of course, we can always argue there are policy changes, there are also other factors. But again, this is just our initial study that we tried to do internally in the absence of impact study. But we tried to filter out some of the policy changes that were implemented during the year 2002-2019," ani Gatchalian.

Sa paniniwala ng senador, dahil sa komplikasyon ng bilingual patungong mother tongue ay hindi nagiging sigurado ang mga mag-aaral sa kanilang Math at Science skills.

Tugon naman ng DepEd, kailangan pa nilang pag-aralan ang datos ng TIMSS at matukoy kung ang talagang ginamit na lenggwahe ang dahilan ng pagbaba ng puntos ng mga estudyante.
