MANILA - President Rodrigo Duterte personally met a former Overseas Filipino worker who was recently saved from the death row, an official said.

In a tweet, Overseas Workers Welfare Administration chief Hans Leo Cacdac posted a photo of Jennifer Dalquez, who used to work in Abu Dhabi, hugging Duterte.

Cacdac described the meeting as “tearful and joyous.”

The Court of Appeals in Al Ain earlier acquitted Dalquez of murder over the death of Arab local.

Dalquez was cleaning households on the side while working as an assistant to a doctor in the UAE. In December 2014, an Arab local contacted her to clean their home. The local attempted to rape her at knifepoint. She fought back to defend herself and accidentally killed the aggressor.

She was charged with murder in 2015, but her case was raised to the appeals court.

The court declared Dalquez innocent without diyyah or payment of blood money, but sentenced her to five years imprisonment, minus the number of days she spent in jail for stealing a mobile phone.

Dalquez returned to the Philippines last Friday, Nov. 2.
