<p>ILIGAN CITY - The local government has ordered the immediate construction of a <a href="http://news.abs-cbn.com/news/11/09/16/landfill-leachate-leaks-into-dodiongan-falls">leachate</a> treatment facility to cleanse the black and odorous liquid that were carried off by rains to the Dodiongan Falls and nearby streams, officials from the City Environment Management Office (CEMO) said Thursday.</p><div class="embed-wrap"><figure data-feedback="fb:likes,fb:comments"><img src="http://sa.kapamilya.com/absnews/abscbnnews/media/news-special1/nation/11/10/iligan-treatment-facility1-111016.jpg"/><figcaption><div class="embed-desc"><em>Roxanne Arevalo, ABS-CBN News. </em></div></figcaption></figure></div><div class="embed-wrap"><figure data-feedback="fb:likes,fb:comments"><img src="http://sa.kapamilya.com/absnews/abscbnnews/media/news-special1/nation/11/10/iligan-treatment-facility2-111016.jpg"/><figcaption><div class="embed-desc"><em>Roxanne Arevalo, ABS-CBN News. </em></div></figcaption></figure></div><div class="embed-wrap"><figure data-feedback="fb:likes,fb:comments"><img src="http://sa.kapamilya.com/absnews/abscbnnews/media/news-special1/nation/11/10/iligan-treatment-facility3-111016.jpg"/><figcaption><div class="embed-desc"><em>Roxanne Arevalo, ABS-CBN News. </em></div></figcaption></figure></div><div class="embed-wrap"><figure data-feedback="fb:likes,fb:comments"><img src="http://sa.kapamilya.com/absnews/abscbnnews/media/news-special1/nation/11/10/iligan-treatment-facility4-111016.jpg"/><figcaption><div class="embed-desc"><em>Roxanne Arevalo, ABS-CBN News. </em></div></figcaption></figure></div><p>The facility is a catch-basin at the bottom of the landfill where the leachate goes and gets treated with sodium hypochlorite that kills bacteria and eliminates stench, project foreman Nonoy Romarez said.</p><p>&quot;Once the leachate leak is managed, there won’t be a need to rehabilitate Dodiongan Falls,&quot; CEMO in-charge Attorney Ranulfo Cenas told ABS-CBN News.</p><p>But the treatment facility will not be enough to contain the leachate if heavy rains surge through the garbage, Romarez said.</p><p>&quot;Leachate may not get enough treatment if a great volume of rain water runs off really fast,&quot; he said.</p><p>The government is now looking into hiring 100 additional workers who will segregate and process garbage at the Central Materials Recovery Facility to minimize the amount of garbage that produces the leachate.</p><p>Records showed that the city produces an average of 50 tons of garbage daily. </p><p>The tourism office has yet to release a statement on the issue.</p>
