Storm surge may threaten M. Manila, other coastal areas in Luzon due to ‘Ulysses’: PAGASA

MANILA (UPDATED) — The state weather bureau on Tuesday evening warned that storm surge as high as 2 meters may threaten several coastal areas in Luzon, including Metro Manila, due to severe tropical storm Ulysses.In its 11 p.m. storm surge bulletin, PAGASA said moderate to high risk storm surge between 2 to 3 meters may be experienced in the next 2 days over the coastal areas of the following areas:<ul>	<li>Catanduanes</li>	<li>northern and eastern coastal areas of Camarines Sur</li>	<li>Camarines Norte</li>	<li>Quezon</li></ul>The following areas may also experience storm surge betwee 1 to 2 meters:<ul>	<li>Metro Manila</li>	<li>Sorsogon</li>	<li>Albay</li>	<li>Romblon</li>	<li>Marinduque</li>	<li>Oriental Mindoro</li>	<li>Occidental Mindoro</li>	<li>Batangas</li>	<li>rest of Camarines Sur</li>	<li>Aurora</li>	<li>Cavite</li>	<li>Bulacan</li>	<li>Pampaga</li>	<li>Bataan</li></ul>&quot;These storm surges, which may be accompanied by swells and breaking waves reaching the coast, can cause life-threatening and damaging coastal inundation,&quot; PAGASA warned.Tropical cyclone wind signal No. 2 has been hoisted over the following areas as of 11 p.m.:<ul>	<li>Metro Manila</li>	<li>Central and southern portions of Aurora (Dipaculao, Maria Aurora, Baler, San Luis, Dingalan)</li>	<li>southeastern portion of Nueva Ecija (Bongabon, Laur, General Tinio, Gapan City, Peñaranda, Gabaldon)</li>	<li>northern and eastern portions of Bulacan (Meycauayan City, Obando, Marilao, Bocaue, Pandi, Bustos, San Rafael, San Ildefonso, San Miguel, Angat, Santa Maria, San Jose del Monte City, Norzagaray, Doña Remedios Trinidad)</li>	<li>Rizal</li>	<li>Laguna</li>	<li>Quezon including Polillo Islands</li>	<li>Marinduque</li>	<li>Camarines Norte</li>	<li>Camarines Sur</li>	<li>Catanduanes,</li>	<li>Albay</li>	<li>Sorsogon</li>	<li>Ticao Island and Burias Island</li></ul>Several other areas in Luzon and some areas in the Visayas are under TCWS No. 1.The center of Ulysses, the country&#x27;s 21st storm this year, was last estimated at around 10 p.m. to be 250 kilometers east northeast of Virac, CatanduanesIt is packing winds of up to 95 km per hour near the center, and gusts of up to 115 kph, while moving west northwestward at 30 kph.The weather agency said that in the next 24 hours, rough to very high seas, with waves between 2.5 meters to 10 meters, will be experienced over the seaboards of areas under storm signals, and the eastern seaboard of Eastern Samar which are currently not under any storm signal.The surge of the northeast monsoon (amihan) will also bring rough to high seas over the remaining seaboards of northern Luzon and rough seas over the seaboards of Kalayaan Islands.“Sea travel is risky over these waters, especially for mariners of small seacrafts,” according to PAGASA.“Mariners of small seacrafts are advised to take precautionary measures when venturing out to sea.
