MANILA- The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) will strictly implement the motorcycle lane policy on major thoroughfares in Metro Manila starting Monday, November 14.

The policy, which will be implemented in EDSA, C-5, Macapagal Avenue, and Commonwealth Avenue, aims to ease traffic congestion and reduce the number of fatal accidents involving motorcycles, MMDA General Manager Tim Orbos said.

“Our objective here is not only to move people faster but also make sure they reach their destinations safely,” Orbos said.

A trial run of the policy implementation will be conducted together with the Motorcycle Philippines Federation (MCPF) on Saturday and Sunday to familiarize and orient riders.

During the dry run, MMDA personnel will be checking motorcycle riders’ proper attire, such as crash helmet, long pants, and shoes; and the mandatory switching on of headlights even during daytime.

Motorcycles which do not have signal lights and side-mirrors will also be flagged down.

Of the 265 vehicular accidents in Metro Manila daily, 30 involve motorcycles. The Road Crash Statistical Report from January to April this year recorded a total of 7,033 motorcycle accidents, 82 of which are considered fatal.

In 2015, the MMDA recorded a total of 18,668 motorcycle-related accidents in the metropolis, 238 of which resulted to deaths.
