Angry Mayor Isko shuts Divisoria sidewalk stalls due to filth

MANILA - Mayor Isko Moreno on Monday ordered vendors in Ylaya Street in Divisoria to stop operations after failing to keep their surroundings clean.

Moreno found the street littered with trash and confronted vendors during an inspection at 5:30 a.m. Monday.

"Hindi ba kayo nahihiya dyan o talagang baboy din kayo sa bahay? Kailangan ko pa kayo sorpresahin? Pinaghahanapbuhay ko na nga kayo eh," he told vendors.

(Are you not ashamed or are you also filthy at home? Do I need to surprise you? I'm allowing you to earn a living.)

"Twenty-four hours wala na ang Ylaya. 'Di ba pinapayagan natin sila sa gabi para makapagtinda sila? Kung ganyan lang din naman ang iiwan sa’tin araw-araw, tigil na silang lahat," he said to policemen.

(There is no more Ylaya within 24 hours. We allowed them to sell at night, if this is what they leave us everyday, they should all stop.)

Moreno earlier asked vendors to vacate Recto Avenue and Juan Luna Street in Divisoria and relocated them to the sidewalks of Ylaya, Zamora, Carmen Planas, Sto. Cristo and Jaboneros streets, among others.

Since assuming office, Moreno has sought to clean up the city and discipline citizens by hosing down a grimy monument of revolutionary hero Andres Bonifacio and clearing roads clogged with vendors and illegal structures.
