MANILA- A new law regulating the criminology profession will pave the way for a stricter system of checks and balances, an official of the regulating body said Thursday.President Rodrigo Duterte recently signed Republic Act 11131 or the Philippine Criminology Profession Act of 2018 which mandates the creation of the Professional Regulatory Board for Criminologists.It is set to take effect next year, particularly in the June 2019 licensure exam for criminologists. Under the law, the criminology regulating board shall be under the Professional Regulations Commission and will be granted the power to inspect criminology schools for competence.“Karapat-dapat na ang magtururo ng mga sensitibong subject sa criminology ay mga lehitimong criminologists. Kampanya ito sa mga illegal practitioners,” said lawyer Lovelika Bautista, chief of the Professional Regulatory Boards Secretariat Division.(Those teaching sensitive criminology subjects should be legitimate criminologists. This is a campaign against illegal practitioners.)The regulating board for criminologists will also have the power to suspend or revoke the license of professionals proven guilty of malpractice. Unlicensed criminologists meanwhile can face charges.“Sana mabawasan ang mga kaso ng malpractice or unethical conduct na china-charge laban sa mga criminologists,” Bautista said.(We hope to reduce the cases of malpractice or unethical conduct against criminologists.)Criminology students also need to maintain a higher grade of 60 in all subjects from the previously set 50 under the new law. Students still have to maintain the same general average of 75.Under the new law, foreigners will be allowed to take the licensure exams for criminologists. A temporary permit to practice will also be required.The Professional Criminologists Association of the Philippines (PCAP) said the new law would compel schools to improve the quality of education.“Kung medyo mahina ang quality ng delivery ng instructions nila, quality ng education nila, mangyayari lalangawin sila kasi walang pumapasa at baka later on isara sila...&quot; said Gerry Caño, President of PCAP.(Some schools may suffer decreasing enrollment or closure if they provide poor quality of education.)
