MANILA - The number coding in Metro Manila is suspended on Tuesday starting noon to give motorists enough time to go home before typhoon Tisoy lashes the region, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) said.

"A typhoon is coming and we do not want anybody to be stranded on the road," MMDA's EDSA traffic chief Bong Nebrija said of the suspension of the coding scheme or unified vehicular volume reduction program.

The MMDA is also inspecting roads ahead of Tisoy's onslaught, he told radio DZMM.

Makati's separate number coding scheme was also suspended, its city government said on Twitter.

Tisoy (international name: Kammuri) made landfall on Monday night in Bicol region, where it damaged the Legazpi Airport, sent tens of thousands to evacuation centers, and left at least 3 injured.

Forecasters said the storm on Tuesday will pass south of the capital, which is home to some 13 million people and host to thousands of athletes competing in the Southeast Asian Games.
