Gilbert Gapay as the new commanding general of the Philippine Army, according to an appointment paper signed Monday.</p><p>Gapay, chief of the military&#x27;s Southern Luzon Command, will replace Lt. Gen. Macairog Alberto who is set to retire on Friday. </p><p>Prior to his appointment as Army chief, Gapay led the military&#x27;s Mechanized Infantry Division and also served as commander of Joint Task Force Harribon in Davao region and as deputy commander of Armed Forces&#x27; Eastern Mindanao Command.</p><p>Gapay graduated at the top of the 1986 &quot;Sinagtala&quot; Class of the Philippine Military Academy.</p><div><strong>--Report from Joyce Balancio, ABS-CBN News</strong></div>
