MANILA (UPDATED) — Students and office workers were among those who evacuated from their buildings in Metro Manila following the magnitude 5.3 quake that was felt in the region Wednesday afternoon.

Classes were temporarily suspended at the Far Eastern University (FEU) in Manila after the tremors were felt in classrooms, especially those in higher floors.

Students said an alarm rang as guards advised them to evacuate to the campus’s grandstand area.

The university said safety officers were deployed around the area to advise students to leave the buildings in an orderly way and to follow safety precautions.

Inspectors checked for any damages in the buildings before students, faculty, and other school personnel were allowed back in when it was deemed safe.

Classes resumed just before 2 p.m., around half an hour since the evacuation.

Meanwhile, employees, tenants, and clients of the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) office in Pasay City also evacuated the building following the quake.

OWWA said the old building was also inspected for any damages, which had not been found.

After 20 minutes, people who had waited at the parking and street facing the building were allowed back in.

Among the activities that resumed were a training sessions for employees.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said 2 tremors were felt in Metro Manila from the magnitude 5.3 quake, which struck off the coast of Tinaga Island in Vinzons town, Camarines Norte.
