MANILA (UPDATE) — Sen. Imee Marcos is taking a hands-off approach to the rocky relationship between former political allies President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Vice President Sara Duterte

On October 11, Marcos Jr. admitted that he was "a little dismayed" to hear that Duterte said they were not friends, saying he thought they were "but maybe I was deceived."

Asked for comment, Sen. Marcos said on Wednesday that she would rather not add fuel to the fire.

"Kapag may dalawa kayong kaibigan 'di nagkakaunawaan, gagatungan mo pa ba? Palagay ko hindi ano," she said.

"Bilang tapat na kapatid at tapat din na kaibigan, huwag na nating dagdagan, kayang-kaya naman nilang sagutin 'yan."

(As a faithful sister and also as a faithful friend, let's not add to the issue. They can speak for themselves)

Sen. Marcos said she still tries to talk to her brother and give him advise despite the busy schedule and different people surrounding them.

“Kung minsan nasasabihan ko pero kung minsan mahirap eh kasi ang dami ngang nakapaligid. I’ve always said, even when I was a 15-year-old, a bratty 15-year-old, that Malacañang is a true snake pit, and it is,” Sen. Marcos remarked.

She appealed to others to not take advantage of the President.

“Lagi kong sinasabi napakabait ng kapatid ko. Pero palibhasa mabait huwag naman pinagsasamantalahan," she said.

SEN. MARCOS STILL WANTS UNITEAM TO WORK

Sen. Marcos has been endorsed by the administration Alyansa Para sa Bagong Pilipinas but she has declined inclusion, saying she wants to be able to talk to both parties in the rift.

"UniTeam was a dream that I shared in 2022 and I hold fast to that dream of unity for all Filipinos," she said on September 30, referring to the Marcos Jr.-Duterte electoral tandem.

President Marcos Jr. has said the alliance will still support his sister and that she will always be welcome at campaign events.

Marcos Jr. and Duterte ran in the 2022 elections under the UniTeam alliance.

The partnership has since turned sour over differences in policies like confidential funds for Duterte's office, a push for charter change, and the handling of the West Philippine Sea issue with China.

In June this year, Duterte tendered her resignation from the Cabinet, from being education sceretary, and from being vice chairperson of the National Task Force to End local Communist Armed Conflict.

One of the reasons she left, according to Duterte, was the alleged meddling of some lawmakers in DepEd's budget which, like other agency budgets, is subject to congressional scrutiny.
