Jervis Manahan, ABS-CBN NewsMANILA — Hundreds of Filipinos marched Monday from the National Housing Authority (NHA) to the Department of Agriculture (DA) to push for climate-resilient and sustainable local food production systems. </div>They said this is an Asia-wide protest that is calling for adequate and affordable food for all.Groups slammed the alleged import-dependent policies of the DA.&quot;Dino-draw natin ang attention doon sa climate emergency, dahil sa pag-init ng mundo, apektado ang ating kapasidad na pakainin ang mga tao,&quot; said Luke Espiritu of the Bukluran ng mga Manggagawang Pilipino.(We are drawing attention to climate emergency, because global warming affects our capacity to produce food for the people.)&quot;Dapat proteksyunan ng ating gobyerno ang ating food sovereignty, ang ating kakayanan na pakainin ang ating mga sarili,&quot; he added. (Our government must protect our food sovereignty.)&quot;Namumroblema na ang sambayanang Pilipino dahil mahal ang pagkain, at nanganganib na sa hinaharap, maubusan tayo ng pagkain dahil sa global warming,&quot; said labor leader Leody de Guzman.(They also said Filipinos continue to bear the brunt of high food prices, and that the problem might worsen because of global warming.) The groups said the Department of Agriculture must focus on ensuring food production can withstand storms and other weather phenomenon such as drought. DA officials are yet to respond on these calls. The groups ended their protest peacefully before noon.
