MANILA — Farmers, fisher folk, and the general public alike are advised to exercise caution and act accordingly as tropical depression Kristine barrels towards the country.With cloud bands spanning from Luzon to Visayas and a trough or extension that extends all the way to Mindanao, state weather bureau PAGASA said many parts of the country can expect to feel the effects of Kristine especially as it moves towards the landmass. <div><a href="https://news.abs-cbn.com/news/2024/10/21/kristine-maintains-strength-forecast-to-intensify-into-typhoon-1143" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Kristine maintains strength, forecast to intensify into typhoon</a></div>Based on PAGASA’s 5 p.m. bulletin Monday, the center of the weather system was estimated to be 760 kilometers east of Catarman, Northern Samar. Kristine has sustained wind of 55 kilometers per hour (kph) with gusts reaching 70 kph. It has slowed down in its westward movement to 15 kph.Tropical cyclone wind signal number one is currently hoisted in several areas in Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. Signal number 1 entails strong winds over an area due to the tropical cyclone with local winds said to be slightly stronger or enhanced in coast areas and uplands. Those under the signal warning may experience minimal to minor impacts from the wind. Significant rainfall is also expected in the coming days in the Bicol Region, Southern Luzon, National Capital Region, Central Luzon, and Northern Luzon within the next couple of days. PAGASA Administrator Dr. Nathaniel Servando urged those caring for crops to harvest what they can while there is still time. “Yung mga may palayan at any agricultural products, kung pwede nang i-harvest, i-harvest na para maiwasan ang adverse effects sa kanilang produkto lalo na sa Northern Luzon na tinutumbok ni Kristine,” he said.(Those with rice and other agricultural products, especially in Northern Luzon, harvest your crops if you can already so adverse effects on your products could be prevented.)Servando stressed the importance of local communities using vital information from agencies like PAGASA to more effectively relay vital information on disaster risk reduction. This comes following the recent conclusion of the Asia-Pacific Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction which the Philippines hosted. “Ang early warning system (EWS) ay dapat nakatuon sa local communities. Paigtingin ang effectiveness nito. Kami ang source ng warning information at the national level. Dapat ito ay ma-communicate effectively sa local para magamit. No matter how effective our EWS, if not utilized, wala pa rin itong silbi,” he explained.With tropical depression Kristine expected to further intensify and possibly move slower as it approaches the Philippine landmass, PAGASA said it is in constant coordination with the Office of Civil Defense especially in flood-prone areas. PAGASA expects around 4 to 7 more typhoons to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility until the end of the year.
