MANILA — Heavier volume of motorists started traveling through the North Luzon Expressway at 6 a.m. Thursday, a day before All Saint’s Day.

Robin Ignacio, head of the NLEX Traffic Operations Department, said NLEX needed to open a counterflow lane from Balintawak, Quezon City to Marilao, Bulacan to accommodate the increased number of vehicles.

Traffic then eased up but is expected to get heavy again at around 2-3 p.m. on Thursday.

NLEX management said the congestion will possibly last until around 10 p.m. to 12 midnight and will resume again before 5 a.m. on Friday, November 1.

A 10 percent increase in the daily average of vehicles is expected for Undas 2024 which means around 363,000 are expected at NLEX from Thursday until Monday, while 85,800 are expected along the Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX) from October 31 to November 4.

NLEX management said some motorists may start coming back on November 2 to avoid traffic, but majority will most probably travel on November 3 up to the early hours of November 4.

Ignacio said choke points are the Balintawak toll plaza and the entries to Valenzuela City and Meycauayan, Bulacan.

At SCTEX, the bottleneck usually happens at Tarlac, but portable toll booths have already been placed to assist more people.

“We deployed more personnel. We have an average of 1,500 personnel from patrol team, incident response teams, security, and our lane assist, all lane assist. And also starting today at 6 a.m., nag-implement kami ng free towing for class 1 vehicles,” Ignacio said.

NLEX has also instructed gasoline stations to have 24/7 mechanics ready to aid those in need.

In order to make traveling faster, NLEX reminded the public to install an RFID and put enough load on their vehicles.

Those who can’t do so can still pay in cash although this will add five minutes in travel time.

“Marami nang online reloading, even pagpasok pa lang siguro before NLEX mag-load sila pwede na eh. They can also download yung MPT drive app kung saan i-register nila ‘yung kanilang account, rfid account,” Ignacio said.
