Just in time for the celebration of Filipino-American History Month this October, history is about to be made in one of the finest U.S. institutions.

Yale students may soon learn to speak Tagalog as early as the fall semester of 2025.

The Ivy League school is following Harvard University’s historic move to hire Lady Aileen Orsal to offer their first Tagalog language course back in 2023.

The Council on Southeast Asia Studies at Yale University has officially advertised for a Filipino instructor position to be filled, with courses set to begin in the Fall of 2025.

The creation of a Tagalog program came after members of a Filipino student organization called “Kasama” expressed their frustration over the lack of such a course.

More than 380 students and faculty members signed Kasama’s petition to include Tagalog in this Ivy League school's international language courses.

Kasama’s persistence paid off after their petition was approved by members of the Language Committee, prompting the search for a full-time Tagalog instructor.

The primary duties of the successful applicant will include teaching elementary and intermediate courses in Filipino or Tagalog across four learning skill areas: reading, writing, speaking, and listening.

Applications are open at the Chronicle Jobs section until Sept. 11, 2025.
