MANILA — Around 30 informal settlers residing just outside the Bagbag Public Cemetery in Barangay Bagbag, Quezon City lost their homes to a fire that broke out Friday morning, November 1. Saturnina Veraces told ABS-CBN News that the fire started in their house around 9:00 a.m., allegedly from an electric fan in one of their rooms at the second floor.“Sabi ng apo ko… Ma! Sunog! Sunog! Saan? Ayun oh! Pagtingin ko nga, apoy na nga!…Umakyat ako sa kuwarto, anlaki na ng apoy - nangalahati na sa apoy yung foam,” Veraces said.Affected families lived at the back of the cemetery’s wall of apartment-type tombs.Veraces said their family has been there since 1991 and this is not the first time they&#x27;ve experienced a fire but this is so far the biggest.“Ayun na nga eh, ang hirap kaya….wala kaming naisalba - dalawang apo ko lang at tsaka ito, ID ko,” according to Veraces.Because most of the burned houses are made out of light materials, the blaze spread quickly engulfing 21 shanties.Fire Chief Insp. Marvin Mari, chief operations of the Bureau of Fire Protection said, they are still investigating the origin of the fire.He also reminded the public to be extra careful especially in times like this, which is a holiday where more people are too busy.  “Lalo na ngayon, ganitong panahon - maraming appliances na ginagamit at umaalis ng bahay, siguraduhin na bago umalis ng bahay tanggalin lahat ng saksakan, siguraduhin na walang nakatirik na kandila,” Mari said.The fire lasted for more than an hour before it was declared fire out by the BFP around 10:17 a.m.Affected residents are seeking help since they save nothing from the fire.“Sana may tulong po samin, matulungan kami - wala kami matulugan eh, lahat ng gamit namin sunog, lahat talaga ng gamit namin tupok,” according to Veraces.Teogenes Biglang-awa, the administrator of the cemetery, said the families are not within its jurisdiction.Biglang-awa explained, it only gives consideration to them to use the gates of the cemetery as their ingress and engress points.”Yun eh nasa labas na ng sementeryo, nasa creek siya - mga informal settlers natin. Naapektuhan kami kasi yung mga yan, dito nakikiraan - mga informal settlers na yan wala silang daanan kaya kanina medyo naantala yung pasok ng mga bibisita dito sa sementeryo,” Biglang-awa said.
