MANILA -- A fire broke out in a residential area in Barangay Batasan Hills, Quezon City, on Sunday, leaving four people injured, including three children.

Among the injured was a 14-year-old boy who sustained severe burns while rescuing his younger siblings.

According to John Havinez, the barangay's Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Officer (DRRMO), the eldest child's injuries were the most severe.

"Yung pinakakuya po nila kaya siya nagkaroon ng malubhang sunog sa balat is sinagip niya yung dalawa niyang kapatid… kaya siya po ang pinakamalubhang natamong sugat sa balat," Havinez said.

(The eldest brother sustained severe burns because he saved his two younger siblings... that's why he suffered the most serious injuries.)

Their aunt, Rizalyn Talamisan-Remot, who was on the first floor of the house with her mother and an infant, suffered minor injuries to her foot and leg.

"Naririnig ko lang nagsisigawan na...natataranta yung mga bata sa taas kasi yung tatay wala nagsamba yung nanay nasa trabaho," she said.

(I could just hear them shouting… the kids upstairs were panicking because their father wasn't there—he was at church—and their mother was at work.)

"Nabilib ako kasi di na niya naisip ano nangyari sa kanya eh. Naging hero na siya sa mga kapatid niya," she added.

(I was amazed because he didn't even think about what was happening to him. He became a hero to his siblings.)

According to Talamisan-Remot, the eldest sibling suffered third-degree burns. He and his siblings are currently in the hospital for treatment and recovery.

The fire reached the first alarm but was quickly contained, affecting only three homes, according to the barangay's purok leader.
