Filipinos in the Bahamas say they will take extra precautions amid the rising number of killings on the island following a travel warning issued by the U.S.

<div><iframe width="640" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/YVvb_43FqT8?&amp;feature=youtu.be&amp;wmode=opaque&amp;rel=0" frameBorder="0" allowfullscreen="" class="fr-draggable"></iframe> </div>The U.S. State Department has issued a travel warning on the Bahamas following some 25 cases of murder so far this 2024 in the Carribean country.Washington alerted travelers to the popular American tourist destination to exercise extreme caution, particularly on the eastern side of the Bahamas capital, Nassau.Florita Viterbo, president of the Filipino Association in the city, said the U.S. advisory came as a surprise.Gang on gang violence on the island, she said, has always been around but these cases remained separated from the main population and tourists.  Regardless, Viterbo said they are taking precautions.“We know where to go,&quot; she added. &quot;We don&#x27;t really go out at night. The nurses who work on night duty, we always remind them to be careful and look around [when] going to the car park and [when going] home.”Nathalie Caragan has been in the Bahamas for 17 years and lives on the eastern side of Nassau.“I saw a lot of checkpoints and I was wondering why,&quot; she said. &quot;And every corner of I drive, literally. So there are lots of military police officers on the road.”But she said she does not feel unsafe.“It&#x27;s not really news to me,&quot; Caragan added. &quot;Only if you avoid these areas in the eastern part of Nassau, it&#x27;s fine. When you&#x27;re in a tourist spot, you are safe.”U.S. travel advisory in Jamaica has also been elevated to Level 3. Officials advised tourists to reconsider traveling to the island as they noted 65 murders in the past few weeks.Geramie Ignacio, who hails from Rizal province in the Philippines, has lived in Jamaica since 1993.“I was actually on my way home [and] I passed maybe three areas where there were police,&quot; she recalled. &quot;They were doing checkpoints. But I think part of it is they also increased the police training here.&quot;Tourism officials from both the Bahamas and Jamaica have insisted that their countries are still safe for tourists despite the warnings.
