Elephants in colorful costumes paraded through the streets of the Sri Lankan capital on Friday (February 23) night, taking part in an annual Buddhist festival.Before taking part in the procession, the elephants received religious blessings from Buddhist priests at the Gangaramaya temple, one of the most prominent religious places in Colombo.Traditional drummers and dancers also delighted crowds consisting of both locals and tourists who lined the streets to see the procession known as the Nawam Maha Perahera.The parade is held every February on a full moon day. The highlight of the event is the appearance of the sacred Buddha tooth relic on a decorated and illuminated elephant. -Report from Reuters
