Death toll in Davao floods, landslides rises to 17

The death toll in the massive flooding and landslides in the Davao region has risen to 17, local officials said Sunday.   Glenda Delideli, Davao del Norte provincial disaster risk reduction and management officer, said 7 people died in the province – five in a landslide in the town of Kapalong, 1 in Sto. Tomas town due to drowning, and another in the town of Asuncion, also due to drowning.   According to Fe Maestre, Davao de Oro provincial information officer, 10 people died in their area, mostly due to landslides: 3 in New Bataan, 3 in Maragusan, 2 in Pantukan, 1 in Monkayo, and 1 in Maco.   Some parts of Davao del Norte are still reeling from floods. San Isidro, Brgy. Anibongan, Brgy. Tuganay, Brgy. Salvacion, Brgy. Mabaus, and Brgy. Guadalupe.   Relief operations remain a challenge for local government units as some areas are still difficult to reach by trucks.   Since many evacuation centers were flooded, many affected families temporarily stayed inside the municipal hall, occupying its hallways and offices.   They regularly receive hot meals from the mobile kitchen.   But many families have stayed beside roads and other public spaces like the Veteran&#x27;s Park as they pitched tents there. They said they have received food packs, but have not received relief goods.   They sometimes rely on the donations from ordinary citizens, groups, and politicians.   &quot;Masikip, mahirap. Ang mahirap din ang mga senior kasi hindi sila makatakbo, hindi nila kayang humabol ng sasakyan kasi ang daming tao, tulak-tulak. Mapilayan na naman,&quot; evacuee Rosanna Ebacuado said.   Garcia admitted that they ran out of relief goods supplies as they already distributed it to the flooded families during the effects of shearline about two weeks ago.   &quot;In the past few weeks, naka-experience kami ng baha, so &#x27;yung relief goods ay nabigay na.
