5 cops in Jemboy Salazar killing walk free

Police officers accused of the murder of 17-year-old Jemboy Baltazar arrive for their case promulgation hearing at the Navotas Regional Trial Court in Navotas City on February 27, 2024. Jonathan Cellona, ABS-CBN News(UPDATED) Five police officers implicated in the killing of Jemboy Baltazar were released from detention on Tuesday.

The BJMP management said the cops walked out of the Metro Manila District Jail Annex 2 on the same day a Navotas court ruled on their case.

The cops completed their clearances then were freed on Tuesday afternoon.

Branch Clerk of Court Anne Kathryn Castro-Diaz earlier said the 4 police officers convicted for illegal discharge of firearms, which carries a penalty of imprisonment of at least 6 months and 1 day, could be released if they have already been detained longer than their sentence.

Six policemen were originally charged by the Department of Justice with murder for the death of Salazar in August 2023.

On Tuesday, February 27, the Navotas City Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 286 convicted one policeman for homicide and four others for illegal discharge of firearms.

One policeman was acquitted of Salazar's killing.
