MANILA — At least 1.7 million passengers are expected to travel through the Parañaque Integrated Terminal Exchange (PITX) this holy week break, the terminal management said Friday.

While some have started flocking to the terminal as early as Friday morning, PITX Head of Corporate Affairs and Government Relations Jason Salvador said the bulk of the travelers is expected to come on Holy Wednesday and Maundy Thursday.

That is why April Sarsoza still had no trouble buying a ticket, even if he did not book one in advance. He is headed to his hometown of Surigao Del Sur for the wake of his sister.

To make sure there are enough buses to accommodate passengers throughout the week, the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board has issued over 1,000 special permits.

“The good thing is during the holy week they will assign LTFRB personnel right there at PITX to issue (more) special permits as needed,” said Salvador.

The PITX is also coordinating with traffic authorities for a quicker turnaround time of buses.

“Sa pagpupulong natin with DOTr (Department of Transportation), specifically minention natin ito, tsaka sa mga LGU (local government units) na dadaanan going towards the provinces, na kung pwede, tulungan tayo sa pagma-man ng trapiko upang sa ganun ay mas mapabilis at hindi mabarang yung mga pampublikong sasakyan going out and in of Metro Manila,” added Salvador.

(When we met with the DOTr, we mentioned this problem specifically, as well as to LGUs where the buses will pass through going to the provinces, that if we could help each other man the traffic situation so that we can speed up and allow public utility buses to go out and in of Metro Manila unhampered.)

Salvador also encouraged the public to wear face masks when travelling in light of the pertussis or whooping cough outbreak in Quezon City.

“While we are no longer in a pandemic, mas maganda siguro kung maging proactive tayo sa ating kalusugan sa pamamagitan ng pagsusuot ng mask while inside a public utility vehicle. Imagine kung ilang oras ka dyan, nasa confined space, air conditioned, di ba? halo-halo na dyan,” he said.

(While we are no longer in a pandemic, I think it’s better if we are proactive in protecting our health by wearing a mask inside a public utility vehicle. Imagine how many hours you’ll be in transit, it’s a confined space, and air conditioned. You are stuck with so many people.)
