MANILA — The Department of Health on Thursday urged the public to “avoid acts or rites that lead to physical wounds and injuries" this Holy Week.

“We join the pastoral guidance of our faith leaders, guiding all towards religious practices that are safe and healthy,” it said in a statement.

However, should an individual still choose to participate in rites that may cause injuries, such as self-flagellation or even crucifixion, the DOH advises them to ensure they are vaccinated with the anti-tetanus vaccine.

Extreme acts of penance have been frowned upon by the Catholic Church but are common sights in the Philippines especially in provinces during Good Friday.

(Opt for safer ways to express penance and reflection. Let’s make the manner of reflecting this Holy Week peaceful, safe and healthy.)
