MANILA -- Travelers from the provinces started to flood the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) on Easter Sunday as they headed back to Metro Manila from their Holy Week vacations.

The queues at the toll booths at Balintawak Toll Plaza northbound, heading towards Pampanga, were relatively manageable.

However, by Sunday afternoon, there was a bit of congestion building up at the toll booths southbound, towards Manila. Beyond that point, traffic flowed steadily.

According to NLEX authorities, the influx of vehicles, particularly southbound, began around midday. Traffic buildup was also observed from the Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway merging onto NLEX due to the sheer volume of vehicles.

An estimated ten percent would be added to the average of 350,000 vehicles traveling on NLEX as families returned from their Holy Week break in the provinces.

Many travelers had opted to leave early in the morning to prepare for the reopening of offices and schools the next day.

It was anticipated that traffic on NLEX would continue to increase throughout the evening, but there was a possibility of easing congestion before midnight.

Over a thousand NLEX personnel were deployed to assist motorists during this period.

Meanwhile, on the South Luzon Expressway, as of 7:52 p.m., while some areas such as the Batino Area have seen a return to light traffic, congestion remains a challenge in other parts. Heavy traffic continues to affect the Cabuyao San Cristobal Bridge Area and the Carmona Railroad.
