MANILA — An overseas Filipino worker (OFW) was among those injured in a fire that hit a residential building in Hong Kong on Wednesday, the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) said.

“Walang reports of Filipinos among those who perished, and there is a report that just came in that there is one Filipino among the 19 injured, but it is not a serious injury and he is an OFW,” DMW officer-in-charge Hans Leo Cacdac told reporters.

He said his office, together with the Philippine Consulate General in Hong Kong, are now attending to the said OFW.

The OFW was taken to the Princess Margaret Hospital where he received treatment for minor injuries sustained on his right hand from splinters as he broke through a glass door to avoid suffocating from smoke inhalation.

Representatives of the Migrant Workers Office Hong Kong (MWO-HK) were able to visit the injured Filipino in his hospital room and ascertained his condition as stable. He will be staying in the hospital to receive further treatment for his injuries.

MWO-HK found out that he just recently acquired permanent residency status in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. They will continue monitoring his situation.

Meanwhile, the DMW is also monitoring the status of 13 Filipinos who have been affected by a fire that razed a residential tower in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates.

The wife of an OFW was among those declared dead, while her partner has managed to recover from injuries.

“The OFW spouse na husband was in critical condition but today he was discharged from the hospital,” Cacdac said.

“He is slated to be repatriated and the human remains of the wife will also be repatriated very soon,” he added.

The other Filipinos remain safe, Cacdac said.

“As for the 9 adults and 2 children they are in a hotel. They are safe and sound. They will be in a hotel until such proper time that they can return to their respective units within the tower,” he explained.

The DMW is still waiting for the results of the investigation as to the cause of the fire. -- with a report from Zen Hernandez, ABS-CBN News
