MANILA -- Swimming in Baseco and Dolomite beaches in Manila is still prohibited, Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna-Pangan reminded the public on Tuesday.

This comes amidst the swarming of people wanting to swim this summer.

"Sa ating mga kababayan na init na init ngayon, bagamat bumaba na ang coliform, may mga basura pa rin nakukuha diyan. Sana po ay wag nyo na subukan po na mag tampisaw sa Dolomite at Baseco Beach," Lacuna-Pangan said.

(For the residents due to the heat today, despite the lower coliform, there is still garbage there. Please do not try to dip in the Dolomite and Baseco beach.)

Both beaches remain guarded to ensure no one gets to swim.

Some of those taking care of the beach confirmed that there are families who have attempted to swim in the beaches now that the temperature is sizzling.

"Merong sumusubok kasi tag-init, mga pami-pamilya, naka-jeep pa, pinapaalis lang din ng gwardiya. Nagsasabi na nung nakaraang taon, nakaligo pa sila, eh iba na ang sitwasyon ngayon," said Severo Alejano, one of the caretakers of Baseco Beach.

(There are those who tried (to swim), families, they are being turned away. They claim they were able to swim last year, but this year it's different.)

"Sobrang init, baka ma-heatstroke sila, sinasabihan namin gwardiya na bawal maligo diyan. Baka maaksidente sila, umaalis na lang sila," said Fernando Principe, another caretaker.

(It's too hot, they may get heatstroke, they may get into an accident, so they just left.)

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) earlier reported that water quality in some parts of Manila Bay has improved with the lowering of fecal coliform.

But the level of coliform isn't low enough to declare that it is safe for swimming.

The public is allowed to do sightseeing and take photos in the dolomite beach, but no swimming is allowed.

Visitors are content with just taking photos around the area.

"Nagagandahan kami sa view, parang napakaaliwalas, ang presko sa loob tapos yung lupa parang nasa beach talaga," said Myrna Del Rosario, a visitor.

(The view is nice, it's clear, refreshing, it's like you're really at the beach.)
