DAVAO CITY — Former President Rodrigo Duterte, who has criticized President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. in political rallies in Mindanao, said this week that he is not against the President.

Speaking during a visit to Barangay Pandaitan in the city's Paquibato district, the former President also explained why he didn't endorse Marcos — his daughter Vice President Sara Duterte's running mate — in the 2022 elections.

"Ako dili ko oposisyon. Dili pud ko kontra ni Marcos," he said last Wednesday.

Duterte’s statement last Wednesday was in contrast to several speeches he has given, where he took aim at Marcos and alluded to unproven allegations of drug use.

Marcos has shrugged off his predecessor’s most recent comments, which came amid questions over a supposed secret agreement between the Duterte and Beijing on not repairing BRP Sierra Madre on Ayungin Shoal.

“I don’t need to pay any attention to that… The former president is a highly experienced lawyer. He should know that ad hominem attacks have no place in these kinds of discussions,” Marcos said while on a visit to Washington DC for a summit with the US and Japan.

Duterte also earlier criticized Marcos over the government's push for charter change, which proponents say will only focus on economic provisions that are seen to discourage foreign investment.

He said there was no need to amend the 1987 Constitution, a campaign promise he made in the 2016 elections when he pushed for a federal form of government.

NO ENDORSEMENT IN 2022 POLLS

"[W]ala lang ko misuporta niya kay, niagi ko'g presidente, unya daghan kog naamigo nga mga kandidato pagka-presidente. So para walay mahiubos," Duterte said last Wednesday.

(I did not support him because I had gone through being president and I had friends who were running for president. I didn't endorse him so nobody would be sad.)

Then administration party PDP-Laban had initially fielded Sen. Bong Go and Ronald Dela Rosa as its presidential and vice-presidential candidates.

Both eventually withdrew from the race that the UniTeam tandem of Marcos and Sara Duterte won by a landslide.

Policy differences over the allocation of confidential funds to civilian agencies, including the Department of Education and the Office of the Vice President, movements within the administration Lakas-CMD party, as well as tension over the 2025 midterm elections have led to cracks within the UniTeam alliance of the country's biggest political parties and clans. — with a report by Hernel Tocmo, ABS-CBN News
