MANILA -- Some government agencies are mulling the possible addition of a dedicated motorcycle lane in EDSA to combat anew the heavy traffic.According to Department of Transportation (DOTr) Sec. Jaime Bautista, the agency already has initial discussions with the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA).&quot;&#x27;Yung EDSA po natin, four lanes lang po &#x27;yan. &#x27;Yung isang lane mayroon na tayong busway. Doon sa right side na portion, &#x27;yung bicycle lane. We are looking siguro po &#x27;yung katabi ng bicycle lane ang gawin nating motorcycle lane,&quot; Bautista in DOTr&#x27;s statement, released Sunday.The official added that based on a study, around 170,000 motorcycles use EDSA daily.&quot;Kasi ngayon makikita niyo sa EDSA, lahat ng lane kinakain [ng motorcycle]. We&#x27;re working with MMDA on how we can improve the traffic situation relating to motorcycles,&quot; he said.The proposal also &quot;aims to address the economic cost of traffic.&quot;According to Bautista, the economic cost of traffic is the additional cost or fuel spent while in traffic, including lost opportunities or time with families.He also cited a 2012 study, stating that the economic cost of traffic in Metro Manila is P2.4 billion a day.Additionally, the study also showed that in 2017, the economic cost reached P3.5 billion per day, and the latest was in 2022 where the losses rose to P4.9 billion a day.Bautista added that the study projected the losses to skyrocket in 2030 at P9 billion a day.
