MANILA — The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) has issued two department advisories requiring overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) who want to work in Canada to go through the DMW.

This comes after the department has noted immigration to Canada by way of employment.

“Kasi ang nangyayari merong mga programa sa Canada that are geared towards, well nominee programs, permanent residency programs, pero ang entry point to Canada is work. Meaning work permit, OFW status, temporary work bago tumuntong sa pagka-permanent resident," DMW Officer-in-Charge Hans Cacdac explained.

"So eto definitely it would be a case of OFWs leaving for Canada ngayon ang problema may mga recruiters itong kababayan natin na hindi lisensyado ng DMW. China-charge ng exhorbitant fees,” he added.

The DMW has recently ordered the closure of two immigration centers allegedly offering employment to Canada.

“Hindi lisensyado ng DMW pero nag-re-recruit ng workers for Canada. At ito rin ay way of monitoring the welfare and well-being of OFWS in Canada. Of course, Canada provides the utmost protection to OFWs, they have good, of course, exemplary laws on labor protection, labor standards. But just the same, yung recruitment process we feel needs improvement. Again, kailangan dumaan sa DMW yung mga OFWs,” Cacdac said.

Cacdac also reminded Filipinos interested in working in Canada that they should not pay placement fees.

“No placement fee policy sa Canada so we want to make sure na walang tinataga na mga OFWs na pupunta ng Canada in terms of halaga ng pera. Yung dalawang napasara natin ay daang libo ang nabayaran nila dun sa immigration for consultancy,” Cacdac said.
